Hort Park - Take Home Kit

In 2013, Singapore launched the annual 'Every Child a Seed' programme where every Primary Three students in Singapore will be given a plant starter kit to grow their own plants. It is to cultivate a sense of ownership and love for the environment and to encourage even the children to be part of Singapore's gardening journey to be a City in Nature.

There are many edible plants and herbs that are within our sight without us knowing. Through the excursion, the children are introduced to several of them. They got to observe and compare the different plants in terms of the shape and texture of the leaves or the colour, and smell of the flowers. The older children were also exposed to the various healing benefits of the edible herbs and plants.

In the above our Take Home Kit, we compiled a summary of the plants they learnt from the excursion. Also, as a follow-up activity, the children also brought home a customized blend of tea to brew with the family! For their tea bags, they got to choose from the following edible plants:

1. Roselle flower : Aids digestion & heart health

2. Blue Pea flower : Promote healthy hair & skin

3. Pandan leaves : Improve sleep & appetite

4. Lemon grass : Relieve pain & fever

On top of the benefits, these plants were specially chosen to give a unique colour and smell! May it be a delightful drink in this hot weather. :)

Also, every child is given a pack of Creamy Letteuce seeds and a growth log card. I do encourage you to get your hands dirty with your children by planting it in recycled containers! May the process of taking care, watching it grow and ultimately eating the 'fruit of the labour' be enriching for the whole family! :))

Plants, whether edible or not, are useful and needful in our ecosystem. As we gain more knowledge of them, I hope that we may all learn to treasure them and see them as part of our world!

We hope it was a ‘delicious’ time for you and your child! See you again next time! :)

Cheers,

Jinshi :)
